Sovereignty, Measured
Against platform diffusion, a counter-model emerges: core collectors. Not the "1000 true fans" theory, which still imagines artists as merchants. Instead, sustainable creative practice requires restoring the high-precision feedback loops that creative brains evolved to process.
Analysis of successfully independent artists reveals consistent patterns: 50-150 deep relationships rather than thousands of shallow ones. These multiplexed connections—financial, creative, social—can function differently than platform metrics. Direct, supportive relationships recruit attachment and valuation circuitry (oxytocin pathways; ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in social-valuation tasks). Direct artist-patron imaging is limited; we extrapolate from social-valuation and social-support studies. Patronage may provide the same high-precision feedback signals artists need.

Among this sample, the median independent who crossed $60k/year (gross, self-reported; genres skewed toward long-tail collectors over ad-supported plays) did so with 80–140 core supporters and ≤10% reliance on platform royalties. These aren't anomalies; they're early indicators.
Research on social tipping points suggests 25% adoption can trigger system-wide change (Centola et al., 2018). Creative communities' high interconnection may lower this threshold. Each successful transition reduces activation energy for the next.
What This Analysis Doesn't Claim
